Coach Mark Stone talks about the Guernsey 2nd XV's chances ahead of their first league game on Saturday.

Seconds coach Mark Stone says there is no reason why his squad cannot win this year’s JRA league. They open their new campaign at home to Les Quennevais on Saturday morning when the squad will be much changed.

‘The squad is looking good for the forthcoming season,’ said Mark, 'We have had a number of lads come up from the Academy this year, five of whom will be in the squad on Saturday morning - Mitchell Smith, Nico Ashplant, Ollie Daunt, Callum Gladstone & Adam Rawles. It will be Senior competitive debuts for the latter three.’

The coach says the top priority for the season is to ensure the 2nd XV provides a platform both for these young lads to prepare themselves for eventual 1st XV rugby and also provide a good standard for those already on the fringe of Jordan’s 1st XV squad.

‘There is no reason why this seasons 2nd XV shouldn’t be pushing to win the JRA league. We had the chances last season and but for a 2pt loss at home to Saturdays opposition and a 1pt loss away to Beeches, we would have finished on top of the table.'

‘In terms of the side for this weekend we’ll look to blend the young lads mentioned above with some of the senior 2nd XV players available. I have Siam Cup winning wingers Andy Bailey and Barry Goude in contention as well as established players such as Dave Davison, Jim Regnard, Leon Gardner and Alec Bailey.

‘Another player we are hoping can make an impact is new Fijian arrival Simione Sawene in the 2nd row should he pass a fitness test on the knock to his knee he picked up v Westcombe Park on Saturday.’

Two players missing will be Fallaize Cup Standoff Andy Rigden who is off island due to work and Centre Jim Elliott who suffered a broken foot in an accident at the weekend and will miss around 6 weeks.
