SATURDAY proved to be a good one for the club’s two main sides.

SATURDAY proved to be a good one for the club’s two main sides.

While Raiders were digging deep for a battling 28-20 win at lowly Westcliff on Saturday, and with it register their fourth straight success in National Three London and South East, the Ladies side were exacting revenge on visiting Canterbury Ladies at a muddy Les Ozouets pitch.

Three tries from Carly Parrott and one apiece from Jemma Crouse and Fiona Power emphatically turned the tables on a Canterbury side who had won their home fixture against our girls who, on this occasion, were overseen by Steve Melbourne in the absence of a holidaying Chris Griffiths. Crouse also added two conversions.

At The Gables in the UK, there was a flying start for Jordan Reynolds' side as Lewis Hillier went in for a pushover Ray converted by Owen Thomas after just five minutes.

It got even better for Raiders on the quarter-hour mark as Westcliff carelessly knocked on to the visiting backs and Glen Walters punished them with a second try, also converted by the fly half.

In their first sustained attack of the game Westcliff, who have a good record against the Guernsey side on their home pitch at The Gables, gave themselves a lifeline with a converted try, but their smiles were wiped off their faces when Hillier scored his second try in a catch and drive move in the corner.

Just before half-time Raiders went to sleep as the home No. 8 waltzed through to score a converted try and with a penalty following the margin was down to four at 21-17 at the break.

Raiders worries in oreads when early in the second period and after several warnings, Walters picked up a yellow to leave his side down to 14 for 10 minutes. Westcliff drew to within one point with the resultant penalty and they would have gone ahead for the first time had they capitalised on another try.

But the kick failed, as did a later penalty attempt and as Raiders improved they sealed the win with a pushover try from Eamon Chapman and Thomas nailed the extras.

The bonus point win keeps Reynolds' men sixth in the table, level with Shelford and also Hertford who stay fifth on points difference.
Raiders are now just eight points off fourth.
