Big 2nds match off; Colts on verge of County title

Guernsey plans to give some returning first XV squad members a much needed run out for the 2nds this Sunday have come to nothing.

The big Investec CI League clash is off.

‘Jersey have pulled out the game saying they could not muster a front row to travel,’ said a hugely frustrated 2nds coach Mark Stone.

The result is that the 2nds are likely to receive all the available points and be a step nearer winning the title.

But it is still a frustration, said Stone.

‘I imagine we will [get the points] as there is no room to re-schedule.’

‘If we win one of our three remaining away games and our remaining home games we should be in the clear.

‘If Buccaneers can take some points off Les Quennevais between now and then it will be even better,’ he added.

Tom Ceillam, Simon Sharrott and Robin Le Cocq were all in line to play for Stone’s men this weekend and if they came through unscathed would hopefully be OK for the next 1sts game on the 21st away to Bury St Edmunds.

The game being off is a blow too to anyone wanting to watch any local rugby this weekend.

It is a weekend off for the firsts and there is no Ladies match either.

But there is an important game and Matt Chammings’ RBSI Academy Colts side hope to score a big win over bottom of the table Burgess Hill and give themselves a chance of landing the Sussex League title from under the noses of big rivals, Hastings and Bexhill.

A shade disappointingly, the squad will not be at strength due to half-term unavailabilities.

‘It’s the title decider,’ said the coach, with the rider that even a win may not be enough.

‘Even if we win it is in other team’s hands and we won’t find out for a few weeks whether we have done enough and whether we come first or second.

‘We are somewhat depleted but hopefully we will still do well.

Hastings and Bexhill have two games in hand and if they win all their games and take bonus points they will finish above us.’
