Matt Hema

Matty Hema has a simplistic and sensible outlook to his rugby career ambitions.

‘Just play good and see where it takes me,’ said the young New Zealander recently.

He was 21 and just a few days when he arrived in Guernsey last month and although he walked straight into a club injury crisis his form was instantly impressive.

We at GRFC are delighted to have him.

The boy is tough, brave, skilful and has one hell of a left boot.

So, who exactly is he?

‘I have lived in a town of 600 people for my whole life and this is the first time I've been away from home,’ said the versatile back.

He is too young to have too many career high points but he says ‘playing against counties for the Ranfurly Shield,’ is his highest honour to date.

As for low points?

‘None, I'm always happy,’ he says.

He says the biggest influence on his career is Justin Burgess.

‘He’s a great coach. He coaches Cobras and I learnt a lot from him and respect him a lot.’

Cobras Tearoha and Valley Swampfoxes were the two New Zealand club shirts he wore before arriving here.

How is it then that he is in Guernsey and who made the approach?

‘Justin Burgess told me about it and I got in contact with Jordan and now I'm here. ‘

He had never previously heard of Guernsey, but he’s lapping it up.

‘I’m really enjoying it and the rugby team has made me feel welcome.

‘It feels like we are a family and coming from a small town it's a big change in a good way.’

As for the Footes Lane set-up, he is clearly impressed.

‘It’s awesome. I look forward to playing home games. The grandstand, the changing rooms and especially the crowd all round, make for a great atmosphere.’

He names Jonah Lomu as his sporting hero and as he is a decent cricketer, who has played at representative level, the Guernsey clubs might ask if he is planning to hang around next summer.
