Guernsey RFC has opened its doors to players from most of the main rugby playing nations of the world, but Fiji is one stone we had not turned.

Until Simione - Simi to his friends and colleagues - Sawene, listened to guidance from some good friends, put a player profile into an agency and it popped up on the internet for the rugby world to see.

‘Within a week, Guernsey had approached me and I thought it would be a good experience,’ said the 6ft 5in former Fiji Under-20 player and professional Rugby League player with the Newcastle Knights in Australia.

Simi, a 23-year-old front-rower, actually grew up in Brisbane. He represented Fiji at the IRB World Junior Championship in Italy 2011 and while best known as a No.8 in rugby union he was used as a prop on joining Newcastle.

He rates the Fijian win over Wales (34-20) in June 2011 as a career highlight. That win helped the Fijians finish sixth in the Junior World Cup that year.

Sadly, due to a niggling knee injury, Guernsey has yet to see Simi in full flow and at full fitness, but the big man says he is getting there and expects to return to action very soon.

‘Hopefully next week I will be back,’ he said. ‘I can’t wait; they are a really good bunch of lads over here and the team is really good. When we all come back I think we will be really exciting.’

Where exactly he lines up in the side is not an issue for him. ‘Anywhere in the forward pack,’ he says. ‘I can play lock or back row and Jordan and I have been talking about me playing in the front row because of injuries. I don’t mind.'

Originally from main island Fiji, he knows all about island life, although his birthplace is quite a deal bigger than here which he is finding much to his pleasure.

‘It’s nice and relaxing over here.’

Well, we're sure the whole Club wishes the big man the best of luck in throwing off those injuries and will be keen to see him perform at his international best.
