Nobody has had a bigger influence on the domestic rugby scene and Guernsey RFC, short term and, to be expected, long term than Steve Melbourne

On the pitch several players have made a big impact this past year.

But, in our rugby terms, nobody has had a bigger influence on the domestic rugby scene and Guernsey RFC, short term and, to be expected, long term than Steve Melbourne.

Across all elements of the sport locally, everyone speaks glowingly of the former Royal Marine and Member of the British Empire.

His military career, the discipline and organisation required to be successful in that sphere, have been vital as he carves out a new career in sports development.

But, fundamentally, it is his ability to not only get over a message but convince others of alternative directions, that is so impressive.

The fracture in island rugby is almost fully mended.

In his time he coached the Royal Marines team, the Navy U20s and youth teams in Exeter, Bath and Hampshire.

All this was while he was in the Marines where his final role was as a staff officer in media operations and training.

‘I have been fortunate to serve for 34 years through the ranks and then as a major in the Royal Marines,’ he said on his arrival in the island, just over a year ago.

And if any of our guys ever complain about things being tough, Steve can point to the time he spent serving in operational theatres ranging from the Northern Ireland conflict to the ongoing Afghanistan issues. Now that’s tough.

On his arrival he said the main thing to do locally was to increase participation numbers and get into the schools.

That he is achieving and the recent Guernsey Schools win at the Lord Jersey Cup was another notch in his belt of achievements, although it was more in an overseeing role.

Improving our coaching system was another key area and he has encouraged the likes of Jordan Reynolds to take on new responsibilities and challenges in this area.

Ask Mark Stone, the Guernsey 2nds, and he will speak effusively about the man who has worked one-on-one in improving m any an emerging colts player in the gym, while offering priceless advice.

‘Steve has been fantastic since he came to the island,‘ said Stone.

‘ My primary involvement with him has been ensuring there is a smooth transition of youngsters from Colts rugby to the seniors which I think has shown a clear tangible benefit to the 2nd XV with our results this season, but he has also aided in training session when I have requested as well as running a number of Coaching CPD sessions during the season.

‘He has also been very successful in getting players to think not just about their rugby training sessions but their strength and conditioning outside the organised club sessions.

‘We probably have more 2nd XV players hitting the gym than we have ever had, and this is a vital component of modern rugby.

‘He has also been a great help to me personally, giving up his time to help me with the rehab on a muscle tear injury I have been suffering with all season.

‘All in all, a fantastic addition to Guernsey rugby and I think the results of sides like the 2nds and St Jacques this season owe some thanks to the work Steve has put in since he arrived last season.’
