Stone playing things down

There will be no mercurial feet and hands of Luke Sayer on show this time, but Mark Stone’s Guernsey 2nds travel to Jersey on Saturday confident of making history.

His side go into their final JRA game with a 77-10 first-leg lead and even the world’s worst pessimist might consider that they have one hand on the trophy and become the first Sarnian side to win it.

Stone is, nevertheless, urging caution.

‘We are very much treating this game as starting nil nil.

‘We have 20+ supporters coming over with us for the game and want to go into the Fallaize Cup against Jersey with another away win under our belt and restart the momentum that was brought to a shuddering halt by Westcombe Park last weekend,’ he said.

‘We were well beaten last time out by Westcombe Park but it was a really unfortunately timed fixture as we were significantly understrength.

‘It was a stretch of our resources just to field a side but full credit to all the lads that played last week.’

No such problems this week.

There may be no Sayer in the starting XV but he has 16 players returning for this fixture including Alec Bailey, Jim Regnard and Bradley Choules.

Andy Bailey is also available to travel should he overcome a calf niggle sustained last week.

Russell Roberts is off island and unavailable but other than that the 2nd XV is more or less at full strength.

The Colts have returned to senior training and are available for this weekend and Fallaize Cup which means competition for places is as strong as it has been all season with players like Dom Rice, Tom Veillard and Taylor Quate pushing hard for starting places over the next two weeks.
