TOUGH TESTS FOR MEN AND LADIES

JORDAN REYNOLDS’ 1st XV were not alone in feeling the might of a team from several steps up on the Uk league ladder.
While the men were shipping 71 points to a highly charged Coirnish Pirates, Chris Griffiths’ Ladies were testing themselves this weekend in the UK.
A far from full strength Ladies went down 73-14 to Trojans.
‘We knew this would be a tough game if we had a full squad, so considering we were missing at least half a dozen key players we did OK in very hot conditions and scored two very good tries against them through Carly Parrott and Tanya Scholtz,’ said the coach.
‘Obviously we have learnt some lessons and that’s why we play hard games rather than easy ones,’ he added.
‘We have three weeks to get things right now before our first League match against Worthing at home on September 13th. Another plus was that we suffered no injuries which is always a bonus.’
On home soil, the Garenne Stand was close to full to see the Cornish Pirates game.
They were rewarded with a 13-try exhibition, sadly 11 of them to the visitors.
But, the sheer guts of the home side was impressive, as were the likes of replacement scrum-half Adam Nixon showing neat skills as he filled in for an injured Malcolm Barnes.
Matt Thomas, too, was exceptional in the back row and line out, while Reynolds enthused about youngster Dom Rice.
'He was exceptional. The Pirates had 30 or 40 kilos on him but his defence was incredible.'
The coach might have easily said the same thing about young full-back Matt Armstrong, who came through unscathed after an incredibly brave display.
The younger of the athletic Armstrong brothers did not shirk anything and there is hope and expectation that Matt will soon spring up to will beyond 6ft, like his brother Anthony who scored a memorable solo try.
Reynolds saw the game as ideal preparation for the forthcoming league campaign.
'It was great stuff. Sure, the difference between us and the Championship is huge, but I thought our lineout was unreal. To score two tries was just reward as the lads put in a real shift.'
The half time score was 24-0.
