2nds face St Jacques in a friendly at the KGV on Saturday, Colts at Heathfield and Waldron, U8s and U10s at Farnborough Festival and U14s at Bognor

Our new Fijian Simini Sawene returns to competitive action for the 2nds against St Jacques on Saturday morning.

The 11.30am kick off at KGV is designated a friendly but clashes between the two clubs are never quite that.

Simi will be playing at loosehead which is an unfamiliar role for him but something the club are hoping he can adapt to in order to provide cover for the 1sts there as well as compete for his usual second row position.

Joining him in the front row is Cally Murdoch who will continue his adaptation from hooker to prop by playing tight head.

Bradly Choules provides the experience at hooker.

Nico Ashplant gets a run in the second row which again is unfamiliar but he is a young lad and has rapidly adapted to everything asked of him so far this season.

‘Dale Martin at 8 has been man of the match in all three of our JRA games this season which is all the more impressive after a three-year break from rugby before this season,’ said 2nds coach Mark Stone.

He adds: ‘In the Backs, 9 and 10 are real issues at the moment with a string of players such as Alec Bailey, Andy Rigden and Dave O’Hanlon unavailable.

‘Rich Hile, who has played almost every position this season starts at 9. Seorsie Lee who adapted well to play 9 against Beeches will move out to fly half.

‘He has the skill set to play there and this fixture gives him a great opportunity to work on the game management required from a 10.

‘Ned Brown who is new to the island is outside him at 12, and will be hoping to catch Jordan’s eye in the lead up to the 1st XV fixture next week. ‘

What the club can well do without is more injuries ahead of next weekend’s visit of Beeches when Stone’s men look to make it four from four in the JRA league.

‘The club’s injury issues in recent weeks have been well publicised and those problems hit the 2nds twice over.

‘Not only do we have regular 2nds players such as Rory Jones (broken collar bone) Dave Davison (hamstring) Chris Ahne (knee) & Luke Gardner (hamstring) missing, we also lose a player to Jordan’s squad for every first teamer that goes down.

‘Jordan and I worked out that we were close to 30 players missing last week between the two squads.

‘Whilst this makes life difficult for me in the 2nds in the short term, it means a number of lads such as Leon Gardner, Dale Martin and Cally Murdoch have gained National league experience over the last few weeks which can only help them as individuals and benefit the club as a whole.

‘The primary aim of the 2nds is to build a wider base of players in who are capable of playing up as and when required.

‘What has also been beneficial is that players up from last season’s academy side have had a chance to bed in, and Mitch Smith, Nico Ashplant and Callum Gladstone are starting to make names for themselves.’

With coach Matt Chammings heading off on a well deserved holiday, Barry Goude and Chris Monk will be in charge of the Colts side who travel to league leaders Heathfield and Waldron on Sunday.

'It's going to be tough old game but we've got a pretty strong side going over,' said Chammings.

One absentee is regular stand-off Georoid Lee who picked up an injury playing football.

His No.10 shirt goes to Tom Veillard who switches from scrum half with Pierre d Garis coming in for him.

Chammings is hopeful of a good result.

'We've been doing a lot of work on our phase play and copying a lot of the first XV tactics. We've been working to the first team format so when the Colts move up through the ranks they are familiar with the play and the systems, so it is not such a big step up.'

Meanwhile, the Under 14s have a Sussex league game at Bognor on Sunday and the U8s and U10s are at the Farnborough Festival.

The best of luck to all the boys.
