Top notch nine-try performance from 1sts with try from debutant Dom Rice; U13s put up a fight against Crowborough but couldn't quite pull off the win.

PERFECT TIME FOR RICE DISH
Guernsey 61 - 6 CS Rugby 1863

The coach wore his best smile.

His team had not only smashed relegation rivals CS Rugby 1863, but they had done so with some of the most thrilling attacking play the GRFC faithful have seen and he had also pulled the wool over the eyes of everyone with the selection of young Dom Rice.

It's not the first time this winter that Jordan Reynolds has hidden his motives with a camouflage selection.

He took everybody by surprise when he brought back Malcolm Barnes and did not want the opposition the chance to target his mercurial No. 9 and his then dodgy shoulder.

Matt Thomas also returned unexpectedly and on Saturday the coach introduced young Rice, one of the bright young things of the RBSI Academy, when we all expected to see Robin Le Cocq in the 7 shirt and Thomas alongside him.

Reynolds makes no apologies for such deviousness and, frankly, why should he?

The reasons were 100 per cent right and, anyway, the occasion and opposition perfectly suited to do so.

On the pitch, Guernsey outscored even the rampant Welsh to take another big step towards National Three safety.

Jordan Reynolds's men helped themselves to nine scores, eight of them converted, six by stand-off Glen Walters and two by Luke Sayer, who also helped himself to a hat-trick of scores.

No wonder Reynolds was smiling, not least with his new fresh-faced back rower.

'He did really well, although it was a massive eye-opener for him.

'I think he was puffing a little at half-time, but he made some great tackles.

'We wanted to keep it (his selection) quiet as we didn't want to give them the opportunity to target him.'

The performance, as a whole, was top notch.

The visitors are known for their good backs play and for the first and last 20 minutes they provided a real test.

But, despite the boost of an early penalty giving them a 3-0 lead, they could not live with the movement, passing and ball handling of the home backs in which every man impressed, nobody more so than the orchestrator supreme, Malcolm Barnes, and the full back, Matty Hema, whose barnstorming running and brilliant hands, were a feature throughout.

'We have been working on our support play all week - that was our big focus and 80 per cent of our tries came from support play,' said the coach who saw relegation rivals Tring and Westcliff lose and, as a result, his side open up a seven-point buffer on the team now filling the final relegation rung, Westcliff.

CLOSE CALL AT KGV

Guernsey RBSI Academy Under 13s mounted a superb fight back in their home Sussex League match against Crowborough today, but it was not quite enough as the visitors went home with a 22-21 win under their belts.

Crowborough, who are second in the table, were pushed hard though and saw a 15-point lead at one stage virtually eradicated at KGV.

Star of the show for the home side was AJ Harvey, who scored three tries and was one of the three players nominated by the opposition as a standout performer.

The other two were captain Rhys de Jersey who started at centre but then moved to fly half, and Brad Jordan, the younger brother of the St Jacques 1st XV player.

Full report to follow on both matches to follow.
