Weekend round up: Hat trick of losses

Results wise, not a great weekend for the club. Played three, lost three but in each case encouraging performances.

In Jersey, a very young and inexperienced 2nds went down 29-21 to title rivals Les Quennevais, while in Suffolk the first team led but were eventually edged out by league leaders and title favourites Bury St Edmunds.

And, to make matters worse, relegation rivals Tring and CS Rugby 1863 both won and with those results we end the weekend back on the bottom of the table with six matches remaining.

That said, it was a good performance by the lads in the UK and escaping relegation remains a strong possibility with the majority of our remaining matches at home and there is still very little between the bottom five sides.

Although bottom we are only two points adrift of Tring and CS Rugby, five behind Westcliff, who arrive at Footes Lane next Saturday, and seven behind Amersham & Chiltern.

Back to the action, on a lovely summer’s afternoon we went behind to an early penalty, but hit back to lead 7-3 thanks to a converted Glen Walters try.

But by the break Bury St Edmunds had scored their own try to lead 8-7.

In the second Bury held the upper hand and stretched their lead out to 23-14 by the end, although Robin Le Cocq charged over off the back of a lineout and Walters again added the extras.

The result was harsh of Jordan Reynolds’ men, the visitors having enjoyed far more of the ball but were made to pay for not taking their opportunities.

The likely champions publicly admitted that Guernsey are obviously in a false position, a point made on the eve of the game when their coach, Gavin Hogg, told a Suffolk paper that his side would not be fooled by the league table.

Hogg said his side would need to be at their best – especially as three of Guernsey’s six wins this season have come against sides in the promotion race.

‘It’s hard for us to grasp why Guernsey are down there considering how well they did against us earlier in the season,’ said Hogg, reflecting on his side’s narrow 30-26 victory at Guernsey in October.

‘They have the potential to raise their games against teams at the top of the table.’

Meanwhile, 2nds coach Mark Stone had mixed emotions after the loss to Les Quennevais, but disappointment at the score-line was evened by pride in the performance of his very young squad.

‘The performance was outstanding. These young lads can hold their heads up high having performed so well against pretty much a full strength Les Quennevais side.

‘Tom Veilllard at 10 had a really good game and really grew into it.

Matt Armstrong, who was only recently 17, was voted their player of the match and scored a try.

Joe Mooney, who is 22, also scored two tries.

More on this game to follow.

It was left to our Ladies to try and rescue the weekend against a strong Crowthorne Ladies

Having been given a walkover by Trojans, their scheduled league opponents, they hastily arranged a friendly against a team who are of a very good standard and showed that by flying into a 19-0 lead.

But Chris Griffiths’ side hit back with three Carl Parrott tries, one of which was converted by Jemma Crouse, and the final scoreline was 24-17.

Incidentally, the three points gained form the walkover from Trojans means that Guernsey are top of the table and can clinch the title when they play rivals Ellingham & Ringwood next weekend.
