Ladies march on, men stumble, U16s disappointed to lose away and U11s and U9s share the honours with Jersey. Other Academy results to follow.

For the second week running Carly Parrott ran in four tries and Guernsey Ladies topped 40 points in another impressive to maintain their NC South East South Two title push.

With a seven-try haul Chris Griffiths’ team beat Southampton Ladies 41-12 to preserve their unbeaten record.

Other try scorers were Chelsie Blondel, Anneka Saunders and Fiona Power.

Meanwhile, hopes of a hat-trick of home wins either side of Christmas were quashed by a good Gravesend side at Footes Lane who won 18-10 in terrible conditions.

With Malcolm Barnes having to spend the majority of the match off the pitch as he was treated for a split lip, Guernsey struggled to carve out the openings their strong backline promised.

Indeed, their only try was a penalty score which was converted in front of the posts by Glen Walters.

It was our No. 10, Walters, who had kicked us ahead with an early penalty, but disappointingly it was our only score of the half which ended with the visitors 12-3 ahead.

Guernsey were desperate for an early score when the sides returned after the break with the heavens having truly opened and they got it courtesy of the penalty try, but as hard as they tried, their handling was not at its best and Gravesend defended resolutely.

Barnes turned to the fray with 20 minutes or so remaining, but there was no concerted pressure and a couple of Montgomery penalties, the second very late on, sealed our fate.

The head coach was critical of his side’s performance.

‘We did not even look like playing any rugby in the first half,’ he said.

‘Defensively today, we played poorly and if you are going to look for any positives, you are just going to be scratching around.’

‘Malcolm’s loss disrupted us but, with the weather the way it was, it did not make a huge difference,’

‘But I do not want to take anything away from Gravesend because they played a great game and deserved the win.

‘They wanted it more than we did and attitudes need to be checked.’

The Under-16s were disappointed to lose 37-0 away to Andover, the same side they shared a thrilling 26-26 draw with just before Christmas under the lights at Footes Lane.

Team manager Brian Evans had four players cry off on the eve of the game and subsequently only travelled with 14 players.

The situation was then compounded when we lost a player in the first 10 minutes.

The remaining lads dug in the best they could, but they were no match for the strong home side.

The U9s and 11s were both involved in mini-festivals against Jersey.

The U11s clashes were played on the 3G at the KGV and each island scored two wins apiece in the series of eight-a-side matches which followed an hour of rugby drills.

The U9s got to play on the main pitch at Footes Lane and honours were again even.

News on the other travelling Academy sides to follow later.
