Manager Penney delighted with performance of depleted U16s

Final score-line does little to reflect Guernsey’s endeavours in a hard fought game with no fewer than 13 tries scored in total.
In other club news, U16s coach Colin Penney has been giving the run down on a 40-30 defeat away to Winchester.
As it happened a spirited Guernsey fight back was not enough to prevent a 10-point loss.
But the final scoreline does little to reflect Guernsey’s endeavours in a hard fought game with no fewer than 13 tries scored in total.
The local side just lost out 6-5 in the try count and indeed it was virtually only the lack of try conversions that ultimately separated the two sides.
A depleted Guernsey U16 team were augmented by three U15 players who played a big part in the Guernsey team's stirring second half comback.
Although Guernsey competed well at the breakdown and more than held their own at set-scrum and line-outs they had over-committed to ruck and maul too often and were regularly exposed by the pace of the opposition out wide.
With the home side 28-5 ahead at half time Guernsey rallied strongly and began to show their own handling skills in the second half.
A few tactical switches at half time provided quicker ball with the U15 half-back pairing of Ben Holland and Leon Collenette proving particularly effective.
Holland scored two tries with Collenette influential in both.
With Morgan Sales on the end of a fine passing sequence to score a fourth try Guernsey began to believe they could get up to shock their hosts.
Unfortunately that hope was dashed out wide again as Winchester increased their advantage.
However Guernsey were going to have the last word the best was left to last.
In a fine individual try wing Fraser Lloyd was released deep in his own half to run in from a full 60 plus metres out beating three covering defenders to make a diving score in the corner.
Manager Penney, was delighted with the performance.
‘To travel with just 14 players and for them to play with such belief was great to see.'
