MALCOLM BARNES’ late try put the finishing touches to a fantastic backs-to-the-wall victory in the mud and rain at East Grinstead this afternoon.
The home side, third in the table at the start of play, had not lost at home in three seasons, but Guernsey produced a classic forwards display to undo the promotion challengers.
Guernsey led 12-0 at the break after Tom Ceillam scored a forwards try after 10 minutes and Luke Sayer then doubled the lead with a second try, this time converted by Sam Whitehead.
East Grinstead threw everything at the lads in the second half but superb defensive work restricted the home side to a mere penalty.
Long before the end the pitch was atrocious, but Guernsey’s ball retention among the forwards, in particular, was excellent.
It was a fourth straight win for the Firsts
Happy days and a perfect way to end 2013.
