TRIES from Luke Sayer, Blair Campbell and Shane Taylor, all converted by the superbly consistent Sam Whitehead, were enough to edge out a tough Tring side at Footes Lane today.
On a firm surface, a total contrast to the last occasion Tring came to the island and edged us out in the mud at Les Varendes, Guernsey did just enough to make it 12 wins in 13 games and maintain their push for a top-five spot in National Three London and South East.
Whitehead had a superb game, with 18 points to his name and a perfect record on the day.
Tring led 13-0 midway through the first half after Guernsey wasted some great positions early on and twice rejected the chance to kick for goal in the hope of a converted try from 5m lineouts.
But Guernsey showed admirable composure to reduce the margin to 10-13 at the break and then edge tough opponents in the second period.
‘I think the difference is that we kept a cool head and Tring got flustered,’ said coach Jordan Reynolds afterwards.
‘I think we showed a lot of maturity,’ he added.
‘I think probably we left 20 points out there in the first half.
‘But we when we stuck to out systems we played some exciting rugby.’
