Reynolds by a loss that could easily have been a win and the loss of another key player and Griffiths by no-show that has cost the Ladies financially.

While Chris Griffiths, coach to our table-topping ladies, was lamenting an enforced weekend off caused by Trojans failing to show up at Footes Lane, 1st XV coach and director of rugby Jordan Reynolds was counting the cost of another defeat and the loss of another key player, this time Tom Ceillam.

The 1sts have a free weekend before the game against fellow strugglers Tring on Saturday week, but in the meantime Reynolds says there will be no let-up for his squad.

'We are going to train the house down because we have a lot to improve upon.'

This was after seeing his side put in a vastly improved showing but still lose 21-14 at fellow strugglers CS Rugby 1863 where Ceillam collected a broken eye socket that will keep him away from Guernsey's relegation battle for the coming weeks.

The hooker's injury adds to Guernsey's woes, but coach Jordan Reynolds saw some positives in the loss.

''There was some good stuff there and we only have ourselves to blame,' said the coach.

'The kind of feeling afterwards is that we did enough to win the game.

'We had six clean line breaks and each time we failed to score.

'Any other week we would have expected to score four or fives tries and we struggled to put those away. It was a comedy of errors.

'W did everything we could to win the game and we did some good things and can take some positives from it.

'We played far better than we did against London Irish, but we are lacking in confidence.'

There was a late change for Guernsey before the game with Rich Hile coming in on the wing for the unavailable Jim Elliott and, encouragingly, the visitors led 14-11 at the interval.

This followed a flurry of penalties for the opposing sides and a good try by Reynolds' men.

The score followed a lineout and after three or four phases of play the ball was worked to the corner where fullback Glen Walters went over.

'In the second half we didn't follow it through,' lamented the coach.

'We weren't even tired at the end of the game but losing is becoming a habit.'

Hooker Ceillam got through the whole game and it wasn't until Sunday night that the extent of his facial injury became clear.

'He will have to fly off to Southampton and have a plate in his cheekbone fitted. He will be out for a while,' said a disappointed coach.

'It's unfortunate as Tom is one of our best forwards.

'We hope his eye will be OK.

'Bradley Choules will come in for the next game and going forward it will be between him and Cally Murdoch for that spot.'

Meanwhile, Griffiths was left counting the cost - not of points but vital pounds in the bank.

The Ladies had been due to host Trojans, but the UK side did not show.

'We actually had 28 players available for the game that was supposed to be played on Saturday, whilst it turns out they could only muster six', said Griffiths.

'They have forfeited the game despite us having paid for their flights in July and they knew about the match as they intended to make it a tour weekend and actually asked for it to be a Saturday game rather than the usual Sunday. Suffice to say we are not happy.'

Griffiths expects his team to be awarded all four points but, as yet, has not seen evidence of those points being awarded for some reason.

The next match is away to Portsmouth Valkyries on December 7th who we drew against at home.

I was absent for that game and all the players assure me that we will beat them when we next play them, so we'll see.'
