'The most encouraging thing though is that the confidence is coming back,' director of rugby Jordan Reynolds after Saturday's emphatic win.

As glorious as large parts of the performance was and the result was pretty emphatic, director of rugby Jordan Reynolds is urging that everyone gets their minds back on the job with more key games to come.

In fact, he is predicting that the relegation issue will not be settled until after the final round of matches in late April.

‘I think it will go the last round and I can see that a lot of these so-called bottom sides have the potential to beat some of the top teams,’ said Jordan who has spent hours since the Westcliff win analysing the video playback of the match.

And, having done that, he agreed with those who say that when we perform as we did in the opening parts of the first and second halves, that we are as good as anyone in the division.

‘We were fantastic in those periods. I’ve watched it six times today, but we’ve still go room to improve.

‘That said to play at that intensity all the time is difficult.’

‘Those first 20 minutes of the first half we were pretty sound (understatement!), but although we dropped off the pace you have got to give credit to Westcliff.’

The 33-22 win not only lifted us off the foot of the table, but two rungs off it.

Guernsey were a class apart from their opposition when they moved through the gears.

The result was five quality tries and a game that had been killed off long before the Guernsey line came under that later pressure which yielded two tries in the final 12 minutes to gave the score line more respectability for the visitors than had looked likely when the hosts had been carving them apart half-an-hour earlier.

Guernsey were off and running with a try inside the opening three minutes.

In that time the forwards put together several phases working the ball forward before scrum-half Malcolm Barnes showed typically astute awareness to exploit a small gap and burst into the Westcliff 22.

That move was illegally brought to a halt by the defence a few metres short of the line, but Barnes did not allow them to reset and his quick tap have Glen Walters the chance to drive over the line.

Walters added the extras and he was doing so again 10 minutes later when Guernsey doubled their lead.

The second try owed much to a strong carry from Ned Brown that put Guernsey on the front foot and the finish was something special as, after cutting back inside off his left wing to beat a succession of tacklers, Jason Batiste slipped a delightful out-the-back-door offload to Matt Hema who dived over.

Frustratingly, Guernsey then took their foot off the gas to such an extent that their lead was only two points by the interval with both Westcliff's tries originating in the forwards.

The first saw them camped on the Guernsey line for a lengthy period before the ball was eventually spun out to centre Conor O'Brien to score and then, on the stroke of half-time, No. 8 Sam Reynolds was receiving the congratulations after a pushover try from a 5m line-out. Gregory Bannister added a conversion with the final kick of the half.

The interval came at a good time for the home side and they regrouped to devastating effect.

Their third try three minutes into the second half came in similar fashion to the first, with Jason Batiste and Brown heavily involved in the move that got their side deep into the Westcliff 22 before Barnes again caught the opposition out with a quick tap penalty that sent Dave Davison over in the right-hand corner.

Six minutes later Hema had the easiest of finishes when his captain Blair Campbell unselfishly spun the ball out to him when Guernsey had a massive overlap with virtually all the Westcliff players having been drawn into desperate last-ditch defence as the green-and-whites piled forward.

The home side were out of sight with 25min. still remaining as Barnes scored a much-deserved try .

At that stage, it looked as if Guernsey could really go to town but their intensity dropped off once more and allowed Westcliff to respond with late tries from Reynolds and Billy Morrant that gave the visitors a vital point to return home with.

'That just kick starts us now. We have London Irish away next then home games against CS Rugby and Tring and there's hopefully another eight points we can pick up there to just gradually pull ourselves out of the relegation places.

‘The most encouraging thing though is that the confidence is coming back.

‘We have to be content.

‘Everyone came through unscathed so it’s all about now preparing for London Irish Wild Geese this weekend.’
