Hema out for rest of season?

‘I thought in the second half we came back into the game, but we had left ourselves a little bit much to do and Tring deserved it.’

If losing in such painful and cruel fashion was not bad enough, it now seems certain that we will be without star fullback Matt Hema for the rest of the league campaign and probably the Siam Cup.

Hema has ben superb all season, whether playing at fullback, on the wing or in the centres, but he suffered an orbital eye-socket fracture on Saturday as he made that fateful last ditch challenge which led to Tring snatching victory.

In a controversial ending to the National Three London & South-East clash the Guernsey fullback clashed heads with an opponent as they went for a kick that hung and swirled in the wind, leaving both flattened on the ground.

The Kiwi spent Saturday night in hospital having left Footes Lane in an ambulance.

‘From the initial assessment, they feel that there is no real damage to the eye itself, but once the swelling has gone down they will assess him again later this week,’ the coach said on Monday.

‘We have got two games left in the league and then the Siam Cup, so he is probably going to miss all of those, but there are then representative games for Hampshire in May and I know the selectors were looking at him so hopefully he might be back for that.’

Reviewing the footage of the collision, the Guernsey coach remains frustrated that a yellow card was shown to Hema for allegedly leading with the forearm and the award of a penalty for Tring which led to their last-gasp try that saw them win 28-27.

To be fair, and as Reynolds admitted, Tring deserved something from the game and it remains a mystery as to how they are so low in the table.

Mind you, perhaps half the division think the same about Guernsey.

The best thing about Guernsey’s performance was the pack, who totally dominated and given that it is quite amazing that they were allowed to keep 15 players on the pitch throughout despite being penalised in the scrum time and again.

But we were sloppy in possession.

‘This has just dragged us down towards the bottom again and the boys will be disappointed, but they should be.’

Reynolds was very disappointed with the first 40.

‘In the first half we were probably the worst I have seen us in eight years – we just could not get past the first phase, it was shocking,’ Reynolds said.

‘I thought in the second half we came back into the game, but we had left ourselves a little bit much to do and Tring deserved it.’
