This season, we are proud to celebrate a key individual in Guernsey Rugby history. Our Siam Cup Men’s 3XV trophy, formerly known as the Mourant Cup, has been renamed the Woody Cup in honour of the late Captain Paul William de Carteret Wood.
Known affectionately to many as "Woody" or "Moosehead," Paul was a man of extraordinary depth and resilience. A proud Guernseyman, he served as a Captain in 2 Para, before transitioning into a successful career as a stockbroker and CEO of his own successful company.
Woody's greatest passion remained the game of rugby. His name is well known around the club, most famously for the time he brought twenty paratroopers home on rest and recovery, which ended in a match just to get some rugby in. The story of Paul leading his men to the doorstep of legendary resident Oliver Reed, charming him into opening his private bar for a marathon session before a match the next morning, remains a great story that many in our club will remember.
Paul sadly passed away in September 2021 after a battle with cancer. By renaming this trophy the Woody Cup, we ensure that his spirit of courage and humanity remains at the heart of Footes Lane.
As we dedicate this match and this new trophy to him, we welcome his family from across the globe to join us. Paul was a soldier, a leader, and a world-traveller, but above all, he was a Guernseyman who loved this island and its rugby club. The Woody Cup now stands as a lasting tribute to a true legend of the game.
