A THIRD straight win has propelled Guernsey Ladies up to fifth in the NC South east South One table, while Jersey continue to go the other way.

Coach Chris Griffiths is still eyeing a top three finish by the end of the first season at this level and on current form that would seem a real possibility.

The ladies won their latest game easy enough, but not before an awkward start, as their coach admitted. ‘We found Beccehamian’s very hard to break down in the first 15 minutes but once we finally managed to get possession we looked the far more threatening side. Our fitness really showed in the second half and once we gained some ascendency in the scrums I was comfortable that this would be one banana skin that would be avoided. Our lineout in particular worked fantastically all day, I believe we won at least 10 of our own and stole the only one that they had. We had parity in the scrum but only on occasion did we really manage to push them backwards, so there are things to work on in that area still.

‘There were some outstanding individual performances on what was a day where the whole team worked very well together, with Tanya Scholtz and Fiona Power being the pick of the bunch with their outstanding ball carrying, offloads and support runs not to mention their exemplary defensive duties. We have to be pleased with winning three from the last three games as it now puts us in a much better place to kick on next year and work hard to get into the top three.

‘We will have a short break over Christmas then we’ll be hitting training hard again in January to ensure we have every possible chance of beating league leaders Tonbridge Juddians on their own turf at the end of January.’

The points came courtesy of tries for Justeen Baker, Anneka Saunders, a hat-trick for Carly Parrott and two for Fiona Power, plus three conversions for captain for the day, Jemma Crouse.
