Teddington 61, 26 Guernsey Ladies

A FOURTH straight loss for the Ladies, but as coach Chris Griffiths defiantly declared afterwards, the project is still advancing.
‘We have been working hard on new attacking and defensive systems over the past few weeks at training and certainly three out of our four of tries against Teddington on Sunday came from these, which is hugely encouraging as it is still early days in terms of implementation,’ he said.
Guernsey scored four tries – 2 from Rachel Merrien, 1 from Tanya Scholtz and 1 from Fiona Ashworth, with 3 conversions from Jemma Crouse.
All of the tries were well executed and Guernsey are showing signs of being more clinical with our finishing. The forwards did really well in the set piece and looked particularly strong in the scrums, so lots of positives again especially from an attacking perspective.
‘However, we cannot overlook the below par display in defence which allowed Teddington too many easy tries,’ said the coach.
‘We have to put most of Teddington’s tries down to missing our first up tackles, which is very disappointing as this is really down to individual errors with technique as much as positioning on the pitch, but this is an area I know can be rectified by the players in training and we hope in the next game against Newbury.
‘We have yet to put a complete performance together, where defence and attack are working well at the same time, but hopefully sooner rather than later we are able to do it.
‘We understand that there are a lot of areas that we need to improve on and we continue to learn and develop with every game that we play, as we have done over the last few seasons, there has always been and always will be a learning curve, this season’s is just steeper than in the past.’

Griffiths insists that player and squad development and improvement is the most important thing this season and if we can look back at the end of the season and see that we have moved forward in this regard then there will be a sense of satisfaction and achievement.
But it doesn’t get any easier.

Next up at Footes Lane this Sunday arrive Newbury, who are currently sitting top of the league and will no doubt prove a tough team to break down.

Kick off is at Footes Lane at a new time of 1pm on the Old Club Pitch.
