One or two may not have been as sharp as normal after the annual club dinner the night before, but the weekend inter-club friendly worked a treat.

Tries from Dale Martin (two), Rich Hile, Shane Taylor and Ollie Daunt, plus four conversions from Alec Bailey gave the 2nds a good run-out ahead of this Saturday’s big JRA League clash in the sister isle against Jersey Buccaneers.

As 2nds coach Mark Stone explained it ‘was very much a mix and match game with a number of the 2nds either rested or playing for the Vets’.

He added: ‘What was great was that we were able to get run outs for a few more of the Academy lads this week who will be pressing for JRA places (and perhaps beyond) in the near future.’

Of those Tom Veillard had a good game at 9 in the muddy conditions, and Ben Honor looked strong out on the wing, making good yards each time he got the ball.

Dale Martin was again impressive at No. 8 and his exposure to a few 1st XV games over that last couple of months has really brought his game on.

Meanwhile, Ollie Daunt and Callum Gladstone resurrected last season’s Colts centre pairing and both had good games. It was the first time they have played there as seniors but they stepped up well.

‘What was encouraging was the first up defence from the young lads,’ said the coach.

‘They were not afraid to get stuck in against the Vets and it was only when we allowed Jim Elliott to run back at us that there were a few tackles missed, but Jim can do that to players at National Three level so we can’t be too hard on ourselves there.

‘Another highlight was us scoring a catch and drive try from the line out.

‘I can’t remember too many 2nd XV teams doing that to the Vets. Russ Roberts has been working with the lads on our lineout plays and its been a really good source of attacking ball for us this season.’

It was important to get the run-out,’ Stone added.

‘With Jersey Buccaneers up next week this was a great fixture for us to have a look at a few things and there will be some difficult decisions to make in selection this week.

‘Next week is also our last competitive game before January and regardless of the result I think we are in a really good place both in terms of our league position and the shape of the squad with the youngsters coming through.’
