The 2nds beat the Vets at the Grammar School in the second of the Simon Chandler Memorial Trophy matches. Both sides looked to play to their biggest strengths, with the Vets keeping it tight and the 2nds spinning it wide. In a fairly even first half the 2nds took a 4 try to 2 lead into half time, courtesy of two Ben Challinor tries and one from each of Will Luscombe and Mark Stone, with the Vets scoring through George Hartley and Paul Christopher.
Straight from the restart, the 2nds added four quick tries, Challinor completing his hat-trick, and Alec Bailey adding tries either side of Richard Hile. The Vets then came back with Christopher’s 2nd try and further scores from Ian Clark, Simon Graham and Steve De Jersey. The 2nds had the final say though, and Stone scored two more to complete his hat-trick, deliberately making the conversion for the last try hard by scoring as close to the corner as possible, but Carl Gardner duly obliged by nailing the kick.
The seconds will pleased to have kept up their high scoring start to 2011 (217 points including 35 tries in 3 games), but a lot of work is needed following the poor defending at times in this game.
