After the 55-5 demolition of Beeches, Mark Stone’s 2nds have the look of potential champions.

They now have four wins from four in the JRA this season and no wonder the coach is a happy man.

‘ We are starting to get a great balance of youth and experience in the side now and gave debuts to two more of our Academy side on Saturday,’ he said today.

Dom Rice, 17, started at open side and give a man of the match display.

The youngster got off to a great start as Russell Roberts took the Beeches kick off and offloaded to Rice who hit the ball up into contact and recycled well.

The first touch can often set the tempo of the game and it was great to see him get stuck in from the get go.

‘His work and energy around the ruck area in both attack and defence was outstanding, but what was even more impressive was his ability to link the forwards and backs play,’ said the coach.

Meanwhile, young Tom Velliard got 30 minutes at scrum half in the second half and is another that has a bright future.

‘After the St Jacques game last week we talked about how our forwards did a good job at drawing in defenders but we didn’t take advantage of the space this created outside the ball carrier.

‘This week Dom along with the other young lads such as Mitch Smith and Nico Ashplant, who both helped themselves to tries in the second half, were not afraid to give a pass when it was on.

‘This allowed us to stretch the Beeches defence and cause them problems all day long.

‘It’s great to see something we highlight in training be transferred onto the pitch.’

Another young lad who made an Impact in the first half was Ollie Daunt. He scored an absolute scorcher of a try that any winger would be proud of. Reminiscent of his dad perhaps!

Mitch Smith offloaded a short pass to Andy Bailey who then set Daunt off with around 55 metres to go.

He beat his winger on the outside before stepping inside the fullback to finish under the posts.

‘A score like that will boost anyone’s confidence but great to see from an 18 year old in a competitive fixture,‘ said Stone.

The half time score had Guernsey 24-5 up and whilst a comfortable score line, the home side were well aware that if they let Beeches score next their backs would be up and it would offer them a route back into the game.

But it was Guernsey 2nds who flew out the blocks and two tries from Dave Davison and one more from Andy Bailey in the first 10 minutes of the second half put the game to bed.

Mark Stone again:

‘The young lads are rightly getting all the plaudits, but a special mention has to go to Andy Bailey who so far has been untouchable for us in this league.

‘He scored another hat trick in this one and he must be close to double figures in tries this year but he is also a great guy for these young lads to play alongside, especially the outside backs like Daunt and Callum Gladstone. They can only benefit from his experience.’

The coach is understandably excited about the season’s prospects, but is keen to ensure the squad keep their feet on the ground.

‘Whilst it’s fantastic to be four from four, we are not getting too carried away.

‘We are well aware that three of those wins have come at home and we have yet to play Jersey Buccaneers (formerly Jersey 2nds) who are our next fixture up away from home on December 6th.

‘If we can get the result we want in that one then we will be in a very strong position to challenge for honours in the New Year.'
