Five first half tries set Mark Stone’s side on the way to secure the JRA CI League Trophy for the first time in the club and Guernsey rugby history.

‘All in all a thoroughly satisfying performance over the two legs, and fantastic that we have brought the JRA league trophy to Guernsey for the first time,’ said the coach afterwards.

‘It been a fantastic season for us and whilst credit goes to the likes of Andy Bailey, Jim Elliott and Luke Sayer who have helped us out throughout the season, the real stars are the young lads coming through from the Academy.

‘We had eight players under the age of 20 in the squad on Saturday and that is great for the club, there are at least another eight that have played for the 2nds this season and we will look to continue this trend over the next few years.

‘Dom Rice and Taylor Quate have already represented the 1st XV, Matt Armstrong has the potential to be of that level and players such as Nico Ashplant and Callum Gladstone are coming on leaps and bounds every game they play.

‘Credit also must go to the regular 2nd XV players that are the glue that hold the team together, guys like Alec Bailey, Cally Murdoch and Russell Roberts have hundreds of JRA league appearances between them so it’s great these guys now have something to show for all the years of travelling to Jersey.’

Stone said the team had marked the occasion duly but now there is renewed focus.

‘We had a good celebration on Saturday night but our focus is now fully on Jersey 2nds next week for the Fallaize Cup, who we know will be a different proposition.

‘We are starting to get some consistency in the squad, and the patterns we work on with the 1st XV are showing more and more in our match day performances.

‘We are still a work in progress as a team and will continue to be for a few more seasons but this league win shows that we are certainly going in the right direction.'

Match report:

Due to the Condor Liberation being delayed by half hour the Guernsey 2nds’ preparations where hampered by arriving to the ground 15 minutes before the scheduled kick off, but thankfully they were able to agree a 10 minute delay.

Despite the rushed preparations Guernsey started the stronger team and Alec Bailey’s boot was keeping them in the right area of the pitch and only a couple of handling errors prevented the visitors from getting an early score.

It was somewhat against the run of play when Les Quennevais, looking to overcome a huge first-leg deficit, took a 7-0 lead on five minutes.

A lost ball in contact broke to the Les Quennevais number 10 who punted the ball up the right wing.

The bounce was kind to the chasing winger who scored under the posts from the halfway line.

There was no panic and Guernsey were back in the Les Quennevais 22 before long.

The pack was making good yards but the killer pass was lacking until Guernsey number 10 and man of the match Alec Bailey took matters into his own hands.

A little show and go sold the home defence and he broke 20 yards to offload to his brother Andy in support to score under the posts for 7-7 with 10 minutes on the clock.

Guernsey then wasted two more golden opportunities to score when Alec received the ball from a ruck five metres out.

Andy hit a great line between the Les Quennevais defence but the ball was spilled.

Jim Regnard was the next guilty man as a free kick from five out was adjudged not to have been incorrectly tapped and play was brought back for a scrum to Les Quennevais.

Regnard was not to be denied for long, though, and when Guernsey won back the put in, the scrum wheeled through 90 and Regnard picked from the base of it and no one was stopping him from a few yards out.

Andy Bailey was soon back on the score sheet again after the ball was shipped out to him 30 metres out and the veteran No. 13 accelerated through the covering defence and held off the last man to score just to the right of the posts.

With Alec adding the extras it was 7-17 with 27 minutes played.

The Guernsey pack continued to dominate the possession and the defence was strong on the few occasions Les Quennevais got their hands on the ball.

The next score came through fullback Sam Stables, who used his pace to beat three players returning a loose kick to score under the posts.

Colts captain Dom Rice was to get the final score of the half. After Leon Gardner had won a turn over, strong carries from Cally Murdoch and Henry Forsey got Guernsey on the front foot.

Young scrum half Tom Veillard hit a short pass to Rice who used his pace to break the line and score under the posts from 15 metres out.

With the conversion added by Alec the half-time score was 7-31 to Guernsey, but Stone then rang the changes with Choules replacing Luke Gardner, Yabsley replacing Martin, Quate replacing Veillard and Armstrong replacing Ahne.

The change at 9 was to have an immediate impact as Guernsey gathered the restart and the pack drove the ball to the 22.

Quate was able to spot a gap in the Les Quennevais defence at the fringes and sprinted though for a score under the posts.

Whilst Guernsey were on the front foot for the most part, Les Q continued to battle hard in defence and Guernsey wasted several try scoring opportunities.

Matt Armstrong was twice caught by the pacey Les Quennevais winger, the first time after Armstrong picked off an interception and raced 70 yards only to be caught with five to go and the attempted offload was lost forward.

Armstrong was caught again when an overlap was created by quick handling along the back line, but the young winger was caught just short of the line by the chasing defence.

Quate tried to repeat his snipe at the fringes when the ball would have been better shipped to one of three unmarked backs and the Les Quennevais defence well and truly shut the door on him.

The final score came courtesy of Regnard who scored a near replica of his first with an 8 pick-up down the blind side from a five metre scrum for the final score of the game and a two-legged score of Les Quennevais 7, Guernsey 2nds 120.

Regnard blotted his copybook when having already been warned earlier in the match for leading with the forearm, he again caught the dangerous No.13 Rupert Lee with a high forearm and the ref had no option but to send him to the sin bin for the remainder of the match.
