Despite a great second half comeback, Guernsey 2nds lost at home to Jersey United Banks to a late try.
In a disappointing first half Guernsey were unable to get any kind of foothold in the game in the first half, with Banks dominating the scrum in particular. Banks opened the scoring early on, pushing over a 5 metre scrum, before Guernsey hit back with two penalties from Alec Bailey to trail by 6-7. Guernsey though were being disrupted at the breakdown and the little clean ball they did win was being turned over due to poor support and ball control. Banks extended their lead mid-way through the half. Skipper Barry Goude was sent to the sin-bin for a late hit on the Banks winger who had kicked through, and from the penalty the vistors opted to scrum. Again they drove Guernsey’s scrum back and eventually a penalty try was awarded, which was also converted. 6-14. Soon after Banks had their third try, another scrum drove towards the Guernsey line before their number eight picked up and popped to his scrum-half to dive over, for a half time score line of 6-19.
Guernsey came out much more determined in the second half and started to win quick, clean ball at the breakdown which enabled replacement scrum-half Divon Crouse to release the backs. The ball was passed wide to Dan Cooper, whose kick through was dropped on by Dave Davison to score. 11-19. Davison added his second try shortly after, following some good offloads in the tackle and strong support play. 16-19. With tem minutes remaining Guernsey finally took the lead after a number of phases near the Banks line, Crouse burrowing over under the posts and Baileys conversion taking the score to 23-19. Banks immediately hit back with a penalty for 23-22, and then with only minutes remaining managed to break away out wide, with their number eight scoring in the corner.
Guernsey remain third in the JRA table, behind Jersey 2nds (on maximum points) and LQ Lions, and of the three games remaining they face both of the top two in Jersey along with a home game against bottom side Beeches.
