The Raiders head coach was not about to sugar-coat Guernsey’s latest defeat on the road.

‘The scoreline was probably a good reflection of the game,’ said Jordan Reynolds of the 56-24 defeat at Bury St Edmunds last weekend.

‘We were not at our best and probably cut some corners effort-wise in the game – that is something that this week we will identify the reasons for and look to address it.

‘We were well beaten.’

The timeline of the game suggests the writing was on the wall from an early stage with Raiders conceding three tries in the opening quarter, although that does not quite tell the whole story.

‘It was actually a fast start by us, we were on their line in the first couple of minutes, had a couple of scrums 5m out and then their No 8 went the length of the pitch and scored,’ Reynolds said.

From 21-0 down within 19 minutes, Raiders got on the board thanks to a Callum Roberts try that was converted by Ciaran McGann.

BSE scored their bonus-point fourth try on the half-hour before McGann responded with a second for the visitors almost immediately to make it 28-12 at half-time.

The hosts added to their tally virtually from kick off in the second half and they would touch down three more times while Raiders picked up a four-try bonus point thanks to tries for Tom Ceillam and Carter Hackett.

‘Attack-wise we were there or thereabouts. Anyone with some knowledge of rugby would know that if you are on the road and you are scoring four tries, you must be doing something right, so I think we probably did enough attack-wise,’ Reynolds said.

‘We were just very lethargic and there was a lack of effort a lot of the time – not setting the line quickly, not getting our two-man shots, our cleans were slow and poor. I felt we were a fraction of what we’ve been previously on defence.

‘We did not make it tough for them and we’re disappointed, but I’d rather be having this problem this week than in two weeks’ time.

‘It is going to take a lot of work and a lot of effort to put it right.’

On the plus side, the coach thought Hackett produced an outstanding individual display and deserved his try.

‘When he got off the plane at the start of the year, he had a string of good games, but then he had this shoulder injury that has plagued him for the rest of the season and he has struggled.

‘But now we’re coming to the back end of the season, he is coming back into some really good form.

‘I wish we could have had more of that this season, but it’s not his fault. Effort-wise, he put in a huge shift.’

Guernsey have two games remaining in this National Two East campaign and next up are the newly-crowned champions Esher, who sealed the title with a 50-28 victory in their top-of-the-table clash with Dorking on Saturday.
