4. Tackling Two Teams - Sophie Burt

Sophie Burt, Flanker for the Guernsey Raiders Ladies, dives into her experience of being a Mum, and also playing for the Guernsey Raiders.

Sophie hasn't returned to rugby once, but twice, after having her two beautiful girls Imogen and Charlotte. Imogen was born in April 2022, but an ankle injury before this meant Sophie's first comeback to rugby was in October 2022, after 2 years without getting her boots on.

In February 2023, Sophie got back on the pitch, after a long road to recovery. She continued to play throughout the season and finished by playing in the 2023 Siam Cup.

In the summer of 2023, with a new baby on the way, Sophie kept on training through pre-season to keep up her fitness even while she was pregnant. Charlotte arrived in January 2024, and by pre-season, Sophie already had the boots back on. In November 2025, Sophie played her first league game back for the Ladies, with a major win over Seaford. Not only was it a comeback, she transitioned to the forwards, and scored her first ever try.

So how did it feel coming back to Rugby? Sophie told us all about her experience below...

How did you find the return to rugby post having your little one?
I have played rugby for almost 10 years now, and returned to the pitch after both babies. The return after my second daughter was a longer road and more challenging. Your body changes so much physically when you carry your baby, and sometimes you need to give it a bit longer before putting the boots back on. I completely underestimated this change after having Imogen, but when it came to returning after Charlotte, I was a little more prepared for this uphill battle. There's still some work to do, but I don't think I have lost it just yet?!

How do you find managing training and also being a mum?
This is the hardest part, and contributed to a long return with Charlotte. The juggle of motherhood and work is tough, and there isn't always much time left for you! The coaches have been good at supporting me; appreciating I can't make each session, and understanding my capabilities too, given I am a veteran! But I have found it so important for me mentally to get back into it! The team have been amazing at supporting me back into the game, and have been real cheerleaders to me on this journey!

If you could give one piece of advice to Mum's thinking about returning/joining to Rugby, what would that be?
When home life is busy, it is important to take some time back for you! And the team is amazing at welcoming everyone, whether you can make every session or not.

How has becoming/being a mum changed your perspective on the game?
As a mum of 2 young girls, I think it's important to show them that we can be strong too... You are not just playing for yourself, but playing to inspire them too!
