Meet Heidi, who has a slightly different story. Heidi didn't return to rugby, she found it just when she needed it the most. And even though her league playing days are behind, she still comes down to support the Ladies whether that's at training or matches. What did rugby give Heidi? Find out below...
How did you find your return to rugby?
I found rugby at age 35; I'd never touched a rugby ball before then. We went down to watch a cousin we knew was playing. I stood on the side of the pitch and watched the Women play, then I turned to see my two babies next to me in the pram. Decision made, I needed something else in my life, and rugby was my escape. I couldn't wait to have some time away.
How do you find managing training and also being a mum?
I found managing training quite well, but that is because U had a husband who agreed we both needed our own time for our own mental health, so he was available for childcare for me and vice versa. I do not know how single parents do this as easily. I think the creation of the MaaMaas is essential and incredible, mums helping mums out to play rugby.
If you could give one piece of advice to mums thinking about returning to/joining rugby, what would that be?
Just do it. Find a local team/club and I promise you it will be the best decision you ever make. I found my people, who I still call family now and I still feel connected to all these years after our league playing days are over, we're still a team.
How has becoming/being a mum changed your perspective on the game?
I have only ever known rugby as a mum, so I guess I don't have a changed perspective. I never had a clue about the game before, they just passed me the ball and told me to run, the rest is history!
